The main points of this theory are that (1) cells (i.e. clones) that react specifically to antigens are randomly generated in the early stages of individual development (embryonic or neonatal), (2) clones that respond to self-antigens are inhibited (eliminated), and only clones that respond to foreign antigens remain, and (3) when a foreign antigen invades the body, it selects a specific clone and causes that cell to proliferate. This theory can explain many immune phenomena better than the previously proposed template theory (the theory that specific antibody proteins are synthesized using antigens as templates), and has made a great contribution to the development of modern immunology.
