1837‐85 A leader of overseas Chinese in Malay. Born into a Hakka family in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, he emigrated to Malay in 1854 and became a worker in a tin mine. He later moved to various jobs and gradually rose to prominence, eventually moving to Kuala Lumpur in 1862 and becoming the third Chinese captain there in 1869. At the time, the Selangor Sultanate, which included Kuala Lumpur, was divided, and the conflict between Tunku Kuding and Raja Mahdi was particularly intense. Yap allied with Tunku Kuding and confronted a group of Kayingzhou Hakka who had allied with Raja Mahdi to take control of the tin mines in Selangor.
