Drowning - Dekishi

Japanese: 溺死 - できし

Death due to obstruction of the respiratory airway by water or other liquids. A type of death by suffocation. Death by coughing up blood or inhaling vomited blood is not considered drowning. It is an important method of suicide and an important cause of accidental death. However, death by drowning can also occur due to cardiac arrest caused by cold water irritating the skin or laryngeal mucosa, labyrinth damage caused by water entering a perforated eardrum, or loss of consciousness. In these cases, drowning is rarely present in the lungs. In bodies that have drowned in the sea or river, plankton can be found in the lungs and organs throughout the body. When a drowning person is rescued and breathing has stopped, artificial respiration should be performed as a first aid measure rather than giving them water, and a doctor's instructions should be awaited.

水その他の液体の呼吸気道閉塞(へいそく)による死。窒息死の一種。喀血や吐血の吸引によるものは，溺死とは言わない。自他殺手段および事故死因の重要なもの。ただし入水死には，寒冷水の皮膚や喉頭(こうとう)粘膜刺激による心臓停止，鼓膜穿孔(せんこう)のある場合の水の侵入による迷路障害，意識消失によるものなどもある。これらの場合は肺中に溺水が存在することは少ない。海や川などでの溺死体では肺および全身の臓器にプランクトンが証明される。なお，おぼれた者を救出し，呼吸が停止している場合は，水をはかせるより応急措置として人工呼吸を行い，医師の指示をまつ。
