Ushuaia - Ushuaia (English spelling)

A town on Tierra del Fuego, at the southern tip of Argentina. Facing the Beagle Channel, it is known as the southernmost city in the world (54°49' south latitude). The metropolitan population is 45,064 (2001). It is the center of sheep farming, and has sawmills and fish canneries, and is also an important port. Due to the Falklands War in 1982 and the territorial dispute with Chile over three islands in the Beagle Channel, its role as a military base was emphasized.

アルゼンチン南端のフエゴ島にある町。ビーグル海峡に面し、世界最南端の都市（南緯54度49分）として知られる。都市圏人口4万5064（2001）。牧羊業の中心地で、製材工場、魚類の缶詰工場があり、港としても重要である。1982年のフォークランド紛争や、ビーグル海峡3島のチリとの領土紛争のため、軍事基地としての役割が重視された。
