The capital of Yazd Province in central Iran. It is located 260 km southeast of Isfahan, on a rough sandy plateau at an altitude of about 1,200 m. The climate is desert, and the city is surrounded by qanat, a water-conducting facility. With a history dating back to the 5th century, it is characterized by its streetscape, described by Marco Polo as a "noble city," and the walled city area is lined with important mosques and mausoleums. The Masjid-e Jami (meaning "Friday Mosque"), which has the tallest two minarets in Iran, is decorated with faience (colored pottery) mosaics, and other buildings are decorated with stucco reliefs and colors. In 2017, it was registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Since the Sassanid dynasty, it has been known for the production of gorgeous silk fabrics. Almonds and grains are cultivated in the suburbs. Some of the residents are Zoroastrians. イラン中部,ヤズド州の州都。イスファハンの南東 260km,標高約 1200mの荒れた砂地の高原に位置する。気候は砂漠気候で,市内には導水施設のカナートが巡らされている。5世紀以来の歴史をもち,マルコ・ポーロに「高貴な都市」と形容された町並みが特徴で,城壁に囲まれた市街地には重要なモスクや霊廟が立ち並ぶ。イランで最も高い 2本のミナレットをもつマスジデ・ジャーミ(「金曜モスク」の意)はファイアンス(彩色陶器)のモザイクで飾られ,その他の建物にもスタッコで仕上げた浮彫や彩色が施されている。2017年国際連合教育科学文化機関 UNESCOの世界遺産の文化遺産に登録された。ササン朝以来,華麗な絹織物の製造で知られる。近郊でアーモンドや穀物が栽培される。住民の一部はゾロアスター教徒。ケルマーン,コム,イスファハン,テヘランと鉄道,幹線道路で結ばれている。人口 48万6152(2011)。
