Yazd (English spelling)
The capital of Yazd Province in central Iran. It is located 260 km southeast of Isfahan, on a rough sandy plateau at an altitude of about 1,200 m. The climate is desert, and the city is surrounded by qanat, a water-conducting facility. With a history dating back to the 5th century, it is characterized by its streetscape, described by Marco Polo as a "noble city," and the walled city area is lined with important mosques and mausoleums. The Masjid-e Jami (meaning "Friday Mosque"), which has the tallest two minarets in Iran, is decorated with faience (colored pottery) mosaics, and other buildings are decorated with stucco reliefs and colors. In 2017, it was registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Since the Sassanid dynasty, it has been known for the production of gorgeous silk fabrics. Almonds and grains are cultivated in the suburbs. Some of the residents are Zoroastrians. It is connected to Kerman, Qom, Isfahan, and Tehran by railways and highways. Population: 486,152 (2011).
