The Shaka Pagoda of the Buddhist Temple in Ying County, Shanxi Province, China. It was built in 1056 (the second year of the Qingning era of the Liao Dynasty). It is the oldest and largest wooden pagoda still standing in China. It has an octagonal shape, a total height of about 67m, and appears to be five stories tall with a mokoshi (a raised floor), but if you include the ceilings on each floor, it is actually nine stories tall. It is made entirely of wood, making extensive use of supporting pillars and cross beams, and 54 types of brackets. The clay statues and murals of Shakyamuni, Kannon, the Four Buddhas, and Manjusri enshrined on each floor of the pagoda, as well as the sutras, books, and paintings that have been discovered in recent years, are of great value in the history of art and Buddhism.
