A former town in Kariwa County, located in the Higashi Kubiki Hills in southern Niigata Prefecture. National Route 252 runs through Okano-cho, the central settlement, and it is home to the scenic Teiganen Garden. This mountain village experiences heavy snowfall, and many people work away from home. Dairy cows are also raised here. In May 2005, it was incorporated into Nishiyama-cho and Kashiwazaki City in Kariwa County. Area: 64.63 km2 . Population: 2,354 (2003). 新潟県南部,東頸城(ひがしくびき)丘陵にある刈羽(かりわ)郡の旧町。中心集落岡野町は国道252号線が通じ,貞観園(名勝)がある。豪雪の山村で出稼(でかせぎ)が多い。乳牛飼育も行われる。2005年5月刈羽郡西山町と柏崎市へ編入。64.63km2。2354人(2003)。
