A general term for insects belonging to the Hemerobiidae family of the Neuroptera order. They are small to medium-sized, with a wingspan of 5 to 35 mm, and are yellowish brown or dark brown overall. They are widely distributed around the world except for the polar regions, and 650 species have been recorded, with nearly 40 species occurring in Japan, including the Yamato Hemerobius japonicus and the German-winged Hemerobius Eumicromus numerosus (illustration). 脈翅目ヒメカゲロウ科Hemerobiidaeに属する昆虫の総称。小型から中型で翅の開張5~35mm,全体に黄褐色ないし暗褐色を帯びる。極地を除いて世界中に広く分布し650種が記録され,日本にはヤマトヒメカゲロウHemerobius japonicus,チャバネヒメカゲロウEumicromus numerosus(イラスト)など40種近くが産する。成虫は4~10月に種々の草木に発生し,もっぱら夜間に活動し,灯火に飛来する。
