Santander - Santander (English spelling)

It is a port city and the capital of the Cantabria region in northern Spain. It is the northern gateway to the Castilla y Leon region. It has a population of 180,717 (2001). It is located on a sandbar on the northwestern shore of a long, narrow cove that leads to the Bay of Biscay. The new city spreads out over the hills along the coast, and is connected to the old city on the west side by a tunnel. It has industries such as food, shipbuilding, chemicals, and steel. Due to its mild climate, it is known as a summer resort on a par with San Sebastian, about 130 km to the east, and the Sardinero coast in particular is loved by the upper classes. It is famous for the summer courses held at the Menéndez y Pelayo International University. The Caves of Altamira, famous for their Paleolithic paintings, are located 32 km southwest of the city.

スペイン北部、カンタブリア州の州都で、港湾都市。カスティーリャ・イ・レオン地方への北の玄関口。人口18万0717（2001）。ビスケー（ビスカヤ）湾に通じる細長い入り江の北西岸に延びた砂州上に立地する。新市街は海岸沿いの丘陵地に広がり、西側の旧市街地とはトンネルで結ばれている。食品、造船、化学、製鉄などの工業がある。温和な気候のため、東約130キロメートルのサン・セバスティアンと並ぶ避暑地として知られ、とくにサルディネロ海岸は上流階級に愛されている。メネンデス・イ・ペラヨ国際大学で開かれる夏期講座が有名。町の南西32キロメートルに旧石器時代の絵画で有名なアルタミラの洞窟(どうくつ)がある。
