...This foam is said to protect them from predators and to keep their bodies from drying out. The foam of the larvae is very conspicuous, so they are known locally as tsuba-kimushi (frog spit) and kaeruno-tsuba (frog spit). They are also known in English as cuckoo spit, frog spit, froghopper, and spittle insect.
