... In the 18th and 19th centuries, as each country expanded its military power, military bands became increasingly important. The country that was most enthusiastic about establishing a modern military band was Prussia under Frederick II (the Great), with Wilhelm Friedrich Wieprecht (1802-1872) being a representative military bandmaster. France's La Musique de la Garde Républicaine, a famous military band with a long history, was founded as a band for the national army organized to defend Paris during the February Revolution in 1848.
