This saltwater fish belongs to the order Perciformes and family Gastropodidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is found in the Pacific Ocean north of Choshi in Chiba Prefecture, in Niigata Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, and in the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that its body is made of agar. Its body is long and slender and flat. Its snout is pointed. The eyes are narrowly spaced apart. It has two lateral lines, the front one running above the pectoral fins and the rear one running down the center of its body. It has no pelvic fins. Its dorsal and anal fins are high. Its body is gray-brown with blackish fins. It lives at depths of 200 to 900 meters and is caught with bottom trawls. It grows to a total length of about 50 centimeters. It is not generally sold commercially, but in its producing areas it is used as an ingredient in hotpots, miso soup, and fried chicken. The closely related species, the white-spotted flycatcher, can be distinguished from the Japanese stingray by having a wider interocular space, scales in front of the pectoral fins, and blunt tips of the pectoral fins.
