A squirrel with several bright stripes on its back, found widely in India, Malaya, Sumatra, Borneo, etc. It is a general term for mammals in the genus Funambulus , family Sciuridae, order Rodentia, and there are five species, including the Indian palm squirrel ( F. palmarum ) and the Northern palm squirrel ( F. pennanti ). It looks similar to a chipmunk, but its tail is slightly longer and it tends to live in trees. Its body length is 11.5 to 17.8 cm, and its tail is about the same length. It lives in various types of forests and shrubs, and is not afraid of people, so it is commonly seen near human settlements.

インドからマラヤ，スマトラ，ボルネオなどに広く分布する背中に数本の明色の縞模様をもったリス。齧歯（げつし）目リス科ヤシリス属Funambulusに属する哺乳類の総称で，ミツスジヤシリス(インドシマヤシリス)F.palmarum，イツスジヤシリス(キタシマヤシリス)F.pennantiなど5種がある。外観はシマリスに似るが，尾がやや長く樹上生の傾向が強い。体長11.5～17.8cm，尾もほぼ同長。さまざまなタイプの森林，灌木林にすむほか人をおそれず，人家近くにもふつうにみられる。
