Black Dragon Society

Japanese:
Black Dragon Society

A Japanese nationalist group. Founded in 1901 (Meiji 34) by Uchida Ryohei and others who were outraged by the Triple Intervention. With Uchida as editor-in-chief and Toyama Mitsuru as advisor, the group descends from the Genyosha. While publishing magazines such as "Kokuryu" and "Toa Geppo" and advocating Greater Asianism and expansion into the continent, the group also pioneered imperialist Asian studies, such as conducting field surveys in various places and compiling maps. It had many ronin (masterless samurai) on the continent, and to some extent participated in the Philippine independence movement and Sun Yat-sen's Chinese revolutionary movement. On domestic issues, it was hostile to the trends of Taisho democracy, socialist ideas, and the labor movement, and was world-famous as one of Japan's leading right-wing groups. During the fascist period of the Showa era, the group leaned towards the movement to reform the nation, and in 1931 (Showa 6) was the birthplace of the Greater Japan Productive Party, which was founded by Uchida and others, and essentially merged with it. After Japan lost the war in 1946 (Showa 21), the group was dissolved by order of the occupying forces. It published such magnum opus works as "The Secret History of the Japan-Korea Union" and "The Chronicles of the Pioneers of East Asia."
