This is a legend about Prince Marko, the hero of a series of oral epics sung among the South Slavs to the accompaniment of the folk instrument gusla. The model is based on a real person, Prince Marko (c. 1335-1395), the eldest son of King Vukasin, who proclaimed himself monarch with his capital in Macedonia at the end of the medieval Serbian Kingdom, but Marko's image as the hero of the epics is also linked to the supernatural abilities of the heroes of myths and folk tales from the pagan era, and the patriotism of the bandits and righteous thieves (so-called hajduks) who were active in the armed resistance movement during the Ottoman Turkish rule, making him the most popular hero in oral literature as a hero symbolizing the people's fervent desire for national independence.
