Abbreviation for Virtual Reality. A technology that allows you to experience a virtual world created by a computer as if it were the real world. In order to experience this technology, you often need to wear a goggle-type device called a head-mounted display (HMD). There are dozens of HMDs, including Oculus Rift, developed by OculusVR, a subsidiary of Facebook, HTC's HTC Vive, and Samsung's GearVR. In October 2016, Sony plans to release a new VR-compatible version of its PlayStation game console, PlayStation VR. Around the same time, smartphones and HMDs compatible with DayDream, a new VR technology by Google, are scheduled to appear.
In VR using HMD, a virtual space different from the one you are currently in appears in 360 degrees, up, down, left and right according to the direction of your face. In addition, various sensors equipped in the HMD measure your movements and inclinations, allowing you to move through a virtual space with depth, and experience a sense of realism in which the objects in front of you seem to be really close, or even touching. In addition to general games such as action games and role-playing games (RPGs), some VR-compatible HMDs allow you to experience underwater or jungle environments. Furthermore, VR is not limited to the amusement genre, but is also beginning to be used in the business field. For example, real estate companies and housing manufacturers are allowing you to experience properties under construction or before construction in VR. These VRs are characterized by the fact that not only can you check the ceiling height and furniture arrangement in a state close to reality, but you can also check the difference in sunlight depending on the time and season in advance.

Virtual Reality(バーチャルリアリティー・仮想現実)の略称。コンピューターによって作られた仮想的な世界を、あたかも現実世界のように体感できる技術。この技術を体験するには、ヘッドマウントディスプレー(HMD)と呼ばれる、ゴーグル型のデバイスを頭部に装着する必要がある場合が多い。HMDには、フェースブック社傘下のOculusVR(オキュラスブイアール)社が開発した「Oculus Rift (オキュラスリフト)」を始め、HTC社の「HTCVive(エイチティーシーバイブ)」、サムスン社の「GearVR」など数十種類の製品がある。2016年10月には、ソニーが同社のゲーム機「PlayStaion」の新製品でかつVRに対応した「PlayStaionVR」の発売を予定している。また、同じ時期に、グーグル社による新しいVR技術である「DayDream」に対応したスマートフォンやHMDが登場する予定となっている。
HMDを利用したVRでは、顔の向きに合わせて360度、上下左右に、現在自分が存在する空間とは異なる仮想空間が現れる。またHMDに備えられている各種センサーによって、動きや傾きなども測定され、奥行きのある仮想空間内を移動したり、目の前の物体が本当に迫ってくる、あるいは本当に触れられそうになったりするような臨場感あふれる体験ができる。なお、VRに対応したHMDなどでは、アクションゲームやロールプレーイングゲーム(RPG)などの一般的なゲームだけでなく、水中やジャングルなどを疑似体験できるものもある。更にVRはアミューズメントのジャンルのみに留まらず、ビジネス分野でも利用されつつある。例えば、不動産会社や住宅メーカーが、建設中や建設前の物件をVRで体験できるようにしている。これらのVRでは、天井の高さや家具の配置などが現実に近い状態で確認できるだけでなく、時間や季節による日照の違いなども事前に確認できる点が特徴である。
