Old Vic

Japanese: オールド･ビック（英語表記）Old Vic

A theatre in London, England. It opened in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre on the south bank of the River Thames, away from the theatres of the West End. In 1833 it was renamed the Royal Victoria Theatre after the future Queen Victoria, and was affectionately known as the Old Vic. It mostly staged popular plays, but in 1912 Lilian Baylis took over as manager and began staging high-quality Shakespeare plays. She died in 1937, and the theatre was destroyed in an air raid during World War II, but reopened in 1950 and continued to present Shakespeare's plays.

イギリス，ロンドンの劇場。1818年，ウェスト･エンドの劇場街から離れたテムズ川南岸にローヤル･コーバーグ劇場として開場。33年，のちのビクトリア女王にちなんでローヤル･ビクトリア劇場と改称され，オールド･ビックという通称で親しまれた。おおむね大衆的なだしものを上演していたが，1912年にベーリスLilian Baylisが運営責任者となり，質の高いシェークスピア劇上演を始めた。彼女は37年に没し，第2次大戦中に劇場も空襲で破壊されたが，50年再開場，シェークスピア劇上演を続けた。
