... The man who put an end to this stagnation was the Berlin-born Elector Friedrich William (reigned 1640-88). Between 1658 and 1685, he built walls around Berlin, Cologne, and Friedrichswerder, which became a city in 1667, turning them into fortifications. He also built the city of Dorotheen, which was surrounded by the Unter den Linden street (laid out in 1647) outside the moat, and began construction of the city of Friedrich, which later became the center of Berlin. He also protected Protestantism, and 6,000 of the 200,000 Huguenots who had left France immigrated to Berlin (population 17,500 in 1685), making a major contribution to the development of commerce and industry, including the textile industry. ...
