Nokonoshima Island

Japanese: 能古島 - のこのしま
Nokonoshima Island

It is an island in Hakata Bay, located in the northwest of Fukuoka Prefecture, belonging to Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City. It is also written as Zanshima, and in the past it was written as Noko, Nokyo, or Noko. It is a plateau-like island with Paleogene layers and basalt covering the Palaeozoic layers, with the highest point being 195 meters, and an area of 3.72 square kilometers. The plateau has been used as a ranch since ancient times, and during the Fukuoka Domain administration it was a horse ranch and a deer hunting ground, but since World War II it has been used for horticulture, growing vegetables, pears, grapes, and more. The center of the island is Enokuchi, and during the Edo period it prospered as a shipping industry, but now it is a fishing town and has many commuters to the city. It is included in the Genkai Quasi-National Park, and has a great view, so it is popular with fishermen, swimmers, and campers. A municipal ferry takes about 10 minutes to get there from Meinohama. Population 805 (2000).
