A Nagauta shamisen player. He is the head of the Kineya family along with Kineya Rokuzaemon and Kineya Kisaburo.

First World

Date of birth and death unknown. Founder of the Kineya family. Younger brother of Saruwaka Kanzaburo (1598-1658, the first Nakamura Kanzaburo), who is considered the founder of Edo Kabuki. It is said that he served as a supporting actor in Saruwaka Kyogen.

(1619-99) The third head of the family and the biological son of the second head, Rokuzaemon. His name was Kisaburo Maena. He switched from being a Kyogen performer to playing the shamisen, and is said to have composed pieces such as "Horokumuko," "Momijigari," and "Shichidanjishi." He is considered the founder of Edo Nagauta shamisen.

(c. 1815-1877) The posthumous name of the 11th head of the family, Rokuzaemon. In 1868 (Meiji 1), he took the stage name Kangoro. He was known as "Negishi's Kangoro." He composed pieces such as "Kishu Dojoji," "Yamanba in the Four Seasons," "Hashi Benkei," and "Tsunayakata." He was also well versed in musical history, and left behind valuable records such as "Osatsuma Kineya Keifu" and "Oyashiki Program Records." He passed away on August 5, 1877 (according to one theory, the 7th).

5th

(1875-1917) The second son of the 12th head of the family, Rokuzaemon. Formerly named Kisaburo, he took the stage name of the 5th head in 1902 (Meiji 35). Together with his brother, the 13th Rokuzaemon, he worked hard to foster the development of Kabuki Nagauta, composing pieces such as "Shinkyoku Urashima" and "Shima no Senzai".

(1925-) The second son of the 14th Rokuzaemon. His real name was Kineya Yasupachiro. He studied under his father and Yamada Shotaro, and succeeded to the name of the 6th in 1942 (Showa 17). In 1981, he formed the Kineya-kai with his brother, the 15th Kisaburo. In 1997 (Heisei 9), he succeeded to the name of the 2nd Soke Kangyoku.

7th

(1955-) The eldest son of the 6th generation. His real name was Kineya Hirokazu. Former name was Hiroyoshi. In 1997 (Heisei 9), he succeeded to the name of the 7th generation.

長唄(ながうた)三味線方。杵屋六左衛門、杵屋喜三郎とともに杵屋宗家の名義。

初世

生没年不詳。杵屋宗家の始祖。江戸歌舞伎(かぶき)の始祖とされる猿若勘三郎(1598―1658。初代中村勘三郎)の実弟。猿若狂言の脇師(わきし)を務めたといわれる。

2世

(1619―99)宗家の3代目にあたり、2代宗家六左衛門の実子。前名喜三郎。狂言師から三味線方に転向、『焙烙聟(ほうろくむこ)』『紅葉狩(もみじがり)』『七段獅子(じし)』などを作曲したといわれる。江戸長唄三味線の始祖とされる。

(1815ころ―77)11代宗家六左衛門の後名。1868年(明治1)勘五郎を襲名。「根岸の勘五郎」とよばれる。『紀州道成寺』『四季の山姥(やまんば)』『橋弁慶(はしべんけい)』『綱館(つなやかた)』などを作曲。音曲の故事にも通じ、『大薩摩(おおざつま)・杵屋系譜』『御屋舗(おやしき)番組控』など貴重な記録を残し、明治10年8月5日(一説に7日)に没した。

(1925― )14代六左衛門の次男。本名杵家安八郎。父および山田抄太郎(しょうたろう)に師事し、1942年(昭和17)6世を襲名した。56年、兄の15代喜三郎とともに杵屋会を結成。97年(平成9)2代目宗家寒玉(かんぎょく)を襲名。
