They are made of stone, bone, wood, bamboo, bronze, or iron, and are attached to one end of the arrow shaft. They are also called arrowheads. Arrowheads can be classified in great detail according to the shape of the arrowhead body, but they can be broadly divided into two types according to whether they have a stem or not. When attaching an arrowhead to an arrow shaft, for stemmed arrowheads, the stem is inserted into the shaft, and for stemless arrowheads, a cut is made in the shaft to hold the arrowhead, and the shaft is then wrapped with thread or thin bark, or secured with asphalt. However, arrowheads were not always attached in ancient times, and there are wooden arrows found in the late Paleolithic period in Germany and the Old and Middle Kingdoms of Egypt. 石,骨,木,竹,青銅,鉄などでつくり,矢柄(やがら)の一端に着装する。鏃(ぞく)ともいう。鏃は,鏃身の形により,非常に細かく分類することもできるが,茎(なかご)の有無によって,大きく二つに分けることができる。鏃を矢柄に取り付けるにあたり,茎のある有茎鏃の場合は,茎を矢柄に挿し込み,茎のない無茎鏃の場合は,矢柄に切込みを入れて鏃を挟み,糸や細い樹皮などで巻いたり,アスファルトで固定したりした。ただ,古くは必ずしも鏃をつけていたわけではなく,ドイツの旧石器時代末期やエジプトの古・中王国時代にみられるような木製の矢がある。
