A type of heat treatment for steel. It is a process in which steel is heated to a temperature at which it becomes austenite, and then cooled in air at a rate similar to that of natural cooling (air cooling) to produce pearlite with fine lamellar spacing. The two phase transformations of heating and cooling refine the grains of ferrite and pearlite, and the high temperature keeps the distribution of alloying elements uniform. As a result, strength, ductility, etc. increase, and there is less difference in properties depending on the part or direction of the steel. This process is particularly important as a heat treatment for carbon steel with a carbon content of approximately 0.5 to 0.9% by weight, and for steel (cast steel) that is used as cast without plastic processing.
