Hanazono-in

Japanese:
Hanazono-in

One of the residences in the Heian and Kamakura periods. It is also called Higashiichijo or Higashiin. It was once the residence of Emperor Seiwa's son, Shikibukyo Prince Sadayasu, and was named Hanayama because of the many dianthus and bush laurels planted around it. It is located south of Kyoto Konoe-oji, west of the Imperial Palace, and east of the current Kyoto Prefectural Office. It was passed down from Fujiwara Tadahira to Morosuke, and Emperor Reizei lived here when he was the Crown Prince, and Emperor Kazan also lived here. Later, it was passed down to Fujiwara Michinaga's grandson Kanpaku Morozane, along with the neighboring Koichijo-in, and was passed down to his second son, Sadaijin Ietada. The Kazan-in family, famous as one of the Seven Seigake families, began when Ietada adopted Kazan-in as his family name. In 1336 (1st year of the Engen era, 3rd year of the Kenmu era), Emperor Godaigo made this place a temporary imperial palace and moved from there to Yoshino. It was burned down during the Onin War (1467-77).
