Willa (English spelling) villa

Japanese: ウィラ（英語表記）villa

A residence or villa owned by the wealthy in ancient Rome. Some were used as resorts for pleasure, while others were primarily used to manage estates. Remains of the latter have been excavated in France, the Rhine, England, and North Africa, but the most important are the approximately 40 willa excavated at the foot of Mount Vesuvius in Italy, which were buried under volcanic ash from the great eruption of 79 AD. The willa buildings consisted of a part for the owner to live in and a part for managing the estate, and the latter included large wine presses, olive presses, wine breweries, and threshing floors.

古代ローマの富裕者が持っていた住居あるいは別荘。保養地の楽しみのためのものと，所領の経営をおもな目的とするものがあった。後者の遺構はフランス，ライン地方，イングランド，北アフリカなどでも発掘されているが，特に重要なのは，イタリアのウェスウィウス(ベスビオ)山麓で発掘された約40のウィラで，紀元79年の大噴火の時の火山灰に埋もれていたものである。ウィラの建物は，主人の居住用の部分と所領経営のための部分とからなり，後者には大きなブドウ搾り器，オリーブ搾り器，ブドウ酒醸造場，脱穀場などがあった。
