A type of heat treatment. Also called annealing. A general term for the process of heating to a high temperature to achieve thermal equilibrium. Usually, this process is accompanied by slow cooling after heating, which softens the material. When combined with quenching to improve the material's hardness, toughness, etc., this process is called tempering. Originally, the term quenching-tempering meant heating steel that has been hardened by plastic deformation to a red heat, then placing it in straw ash to slowly cool and soften it. This is now called complete annealing of steel, and corresponds to the production of relatively coarse pearlite from austenite. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
