Something that accepts electrons from the valence band in a semiconductor (supplies a hole). In Ge and Si, this refers to elements from group 13 of the periodic table, and in semiconductors from groups 13 to 15, these are elements from groups 12 or 14 that have substituted for atoms in the host material, as well as excess negative ions in compound semiconductors. Also, vacancies that have lost positive ions tend to become acceptors, and in the band model they are located near the top of the valence band within the forbidden band, creating an acceptor level. Shallow acceptor levels ionize with thermal energy at about room temperature, and supply free holes to the valence band.
