…In 1668 he became organist at the St. Mary's Church in Lübeck, a position he held for the rest of his life. He continued the secular musical events known as the Abendmusik (evening music), which had been held in the church for some time, and developed them into large-scale events that included not only organ performances, but also chorales and orchestras. He composed about 90 organ pieces, including chorale-based pieces, chaconnes, passacaglias, canzonas, fugues, toccatas, and many others, and many of them are characterized by a somewhat dark and fantastical style typical of northern musicians. …
