Tales - tales

Among oral literature that is passed down by word of mouth, not by writing, it is expressed in prose. It is the opposite of popular songs. It includes myths, legends, folk tales, and gossip. It is characterized by being a report of hearsay, not a report of experiential facts. While popular songs emphasize the form of expression and are generally sung in conjunction with music, storytelling is a literary form told with a focus on the development of the story. In the Miyako Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, there is a vocabulary system for literature in which the equivalent of storytelling is called yugatari and the equivalent of popular songs is called ayago (agu). Yugatari is the exact same concept as storytelling, and includes myths, legends, folk tales, and gossip, and is also said to be told in the form of hearsay. In literary history, what is called a "story" is almost the same as a storytelling. The conclusion of the Konjaku Monogatarishu, "That is, it was passed down and told...", is a typical example; however, in literature, when the word "setsuwa" is used it refers to short tales, and longer ones are usually called monogatari.

文字によらずに、口伝えによって継承される口承文芸のうち、散文で表現されるもの。歌謡の対。神話、伝説、昔話、世間話などが含まれる。体験的事実の報告ではなく、伝聞による報告であるところに特色がある。歌謡が表現の形式を重視し、おおむね音楽と一体になって歌われる文芸であるのに対して、説話はストーリーの展開に主眼を置いて語られる文芸である。沖縄県宮古(みやこ)列島では、説話に相当するものをユガタリ、歌謡に相当するものをアヤゴ（アーグ）とよぶ、文芸に関する語彙(ごい)体系がある。ユガタリは説話とまったく等しい概念で、神話、伝説、昔話、世間話を包括し、やはり伝聞の形で語るものであるという。文学史上では「物語」とよばれるものがほぼ説話に一致する。『今昔物語集』が「――と語り伝えたということである」と結んでいるのはその典型であるが、文学のほうでは、説話といった場合には短編の説話をさし、長編のものは物語とよぶのが普通である。
