Molnár Ferenc (English spelling)

Hungarian playwright and novelist. Born in Budapest, he was of Jewish descent and started out as a writer of humorous short stories, but he gained a place in the theater world with the success of his play The Devil (1907), and gained international fame with Liliom (1909) and The Guard (1910). He went on to write many more plays, including The Swan (1920) and Olympia (1928), which became popular in theaters around the world, but he fled to the United States to escape Nazi oppression, and died in New York after World War II. He also wrote a great number of novels, and his best-known work is the children's novel The Boys of Pearl Street (1907). His World War I war diary The Memoirs of a War Correspondent (1916) is also one of his masterpieces. Molnar's plays have been frequently performed in Japan since his first performance of "Liliom" at the Tsukiji Little Theatre in 1927, and "The Boys from Pearl Street" is also widely read.
