German theologian. Pastor of the Diocese of Bremen and the University of Bremen (1953), Private Lecturer in Systematic Theology at the University of Göttingen (57), Professor at the Theological University of Wuppertal (58), Professor at the University of Bonn (63), and Professor at the University of Tübingen. In particular, his Theologie der Hoffnung (64) (Theology of Hope) made a refreshing impact on the world theological community and sparked a debate on the theology of revolution. His Der gekreuzigte Gott (God Crucified) (72), published ten years later, argues that the Christian God is not an unfeeling God but a suffering God, and encourages a reconsideration of the concept of God. His other major works include Kirche in der Kraft des Geistes (75) and "Wer ist der Mensch'?" (75).
