The leaves and stems of the Mentha genus, a perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family, are dried, and the essential oil contained therein (yield about 1%) is separated by steam distillation (extracted oil), and cooled to below 4°C. This is a pale yellow liquid that is refined by removing the white crystals (menthol brain) mainly consisting of free menthol. It is also called de-menthagen oil. There are many types of mint used as a raw material, and the main components vary greatly depending on the raw material, so it is often called by different names. The oriental species ( M. arvensis ), including Japanese mint, has a high menthol content in its essential oil, and the main components are l -menthol (70-90%), menthone (21%), pinene, camphene, menthenone, limonene, sesquiterpenes, etc., and this is what is meant when the term "menthka oil" is used in the narrow sense.
