It is the simplest carboxylic acid, and is so named because it is found in the venom glands of ants and bees (the Latin word formica means ant). It is also found in many plants, such as nettles and pine. It is thought that the tingling sensation that occurs when you touch nettles is due to formic acid. Its chemical formula is HCOOH, boiling point is 100.8°C, melting point is 8.4°C, and specific gravity is 1.2202. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor that mixes with water in any ratio and also mixes well with ethyl alcohol and ether. It has a strong sour taste and causes blisters on contact with the skin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
