Daniel Mornet

1878‐1954
French literary historian. Professor at the Faculty of Literature, University of Paris. He engaged in research into 17th and 18th century literature, and succeeded G. Ranson, taking his strict positivism to the next level. As a result, he made great contributions to the excavation of materials, such as research into non-literary materials and second- and third-rate works, and the revision of major works. On the other hand, he was criticized for merely listing many materials, for lacking a strong reason to bring them together, and for failing to grasp the inner appeal of the works due to an excessive understanding of the works from the outside.

フランスの文学史家。パリ大学文学部教授。17,18世紀文学の研究に従事し，G.ランソンの後を受け，その厳密な実証主義をさらに徹底させた。その結果，文学以外の資料，二流，三流の作品の研究など，資料の発掘，主要作品の校訂などに大きな貢献を成し遂げたが，他方，多くの資料の羅列に終わり，それをまとめる強力な思考の欠如，外側からの作品理解の行過ぎによる，作品の内的魅力の把握の不足，などの批判を受けるにいたった。
