A manganese nitrate with oxidation states II and III. Manganese nitrate(II) is obtained as a hexahydrate at room temperature or below when the aqueous solution of manganese metal or manganese carbonate(II) dissolved in nitric acid is evaporated. It is highly soluble in water and ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Other forms include tetra-, tri-, di- and monohydrates. When the hydrate crystals are left to stand with diphosphorus pentoxide, an anhydrous form is obtained. It is hygroscopic and decomposes at 200°C into nitrogen dioxide and manganese oxide(IV). Both are pale pink crystals. It is used as a catalyst. Manganese nitrate(III) Mn(NO 3 ) trihydrate was difficult to synthesize, but it was made in 1972 by reacting anhydrous manganese fluoride(III) with a mixture of dinitrogen pentoxide and dinitrogen tetroxide.
