Greek goddesses of fate. Usually the plural Moirai is used. They are said to be the children of Nyx, the goddess of night, but there is also a theory that they are the children of Zeus and Themis. Originally, Moirai meant "share" or "allotment," and they were first associated with life and death, but eventually they were personified as goddesses of fate. The Moirai are three old goddesses: Clotho (the spinner) spins the fate, Lachesis (the distributor) allocates the fate and decides the length of the thread of fate, and Atropos (the unchanging woman) cuts the thread of fate. The three do not have their own myths, but on the night of the seventh day after Meleager's birth, his mother Althaea saw the three old women appear while she was half asleep, tell her how long Meleager would live, and then disappear. This is an example of the Moirai appearing in mythology. In Rome, they are identified with the Parcae.
