King of Kush (reigned c. 751-c. 716 BC), first king of the 25th dynasty of ancient Egypt. Also called Pankhi. During the nominal rule of the 23rd dynasty of ancient Egypt, he was the sovereign of Kush, with his capital at Napata on the Nile in Nubia. He later invaded Egypt, drove King Tefnakht of the 24th dynasty out of Middle Egypt, and conquered Memphis and other cities. After making Tefnakht swear an oath of vassalage, he returned to Kush. His military exploits in Egypt are inscribed on a granite stele in the National Museum of Egypt. According to tradition, his brother Shabaka founded the 25th dynasty, but in recent times it is generally believed that Piankhi was the first king.
