Eifukuji Temple

This independent temple is located in Taishi-cho, Minamikawachi-gun, Osaka Prefecture. It was originally a Koyasan Shingon sect temple. It is called Isonaga-san Shoryo-in, and is also called Isonaga-ji, Kami no Taishi, Ishikawa-dera, and Gobyo-ji. When Prince Shotoku died in 622 (the 30th year of the reign of Empress Suiko), he was buried here, and the temple was built by order of Empress Suiko. In 724 (the 1st year of Jinki), Emperor Shomu developed the seven halls and temple buildings. It has been revered by successive emperors, and in the Kamakura period, it received a manor donation from the retired Emperor Kameyama, which is said to have reached 20,000 koku. High priests of various sects, including Kukai, Shinran, and Nichiren, revered and stayed here as pilgrims. The temple was destroyed by fire in 1574 (Tensho 2), but was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1603 (Keicho 8), and the Shoryoden (a national important cultural property) and other buildings were reconstructed. The current Tahoto (a national important cultural property), Kondo (main hall), and Nembutsu-do (pagoda) were built after the reconstruction. The prince's birth mother (Empress Anahobe no Hashihito) and his wife are buried in the tomb at the back of the temple grounds, and the temple is known as the Sankoichi-byo (three bones, one tomb). The temple treasures, the Monju-kaizu (map of Manjusri's journey across the sea) and the tombstone of Takaya no Muraji Hirohito, are national important cultural properties. The Prince Shotoku Goho-e (Upper Prince Goeshiki) held from April 10th to 12th attracts many worshippers.
