For this reason, when classifying musical instruments in instrumentology and ethnomusicology, the Sachs-Hornbostel system proposed by Hornbostel and C. Sachs in "Taxophonology" (1914) is usually used. According to this system, all musical instruments are first classified into four types: idiophones, membranophones, chordophones, and aerophones, and each of these is further classified.
