An evergreen perennial plant of the family Prunaceae. It is found throughout Japan, Sakhalin, the southern Kuril Islands, Taiwan, and the eastern part of the Asian continent, and grows in low mountain and coastal forests. The stem is 5-10 cm tall. The leaves are arranged in whorls of 2-3, are oblong, 1.5-3 cm long, 6-10 mm wide, hard, shiny, and have sharp sawtooth edges. The flowering season is June-July, and the inflorescence grows 4-8 cm tall at the end of the stem, with fine protuberances and 1-3 bracts at the top. There are 1-2 flowers, 1 cm in diameter, white, and they bloom slightly downward at first. The calyx has 5 lobes, 10 stamens, the base of the filaments is swollen and hairy, and the anthers have holes at the top from which pollen is released. The fruit is oblate. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the flowers are downward-facing, similar to those of the plum.
