It is a marine animal belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia, order Actiniaria, family Anthopleura. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It belongs to the genus Anthopleura , which has a peripheral bulb between the upper end of the body wall and the tentacles, and a row of adhesive warts on the body wall. It is 4-7 cm tall and 4-6 cm wide, with brown body walls and tentacles, and cream-colored peripheral bulbs. It has 96 tentacles in 5 rows. There are 48 pairs of diaphragms in 4 rows, and the first to third rows are completely diaphragmatic and have gonads. It is most commonly seen in the upper and middle intertidal zones of rocky coasts in central Honshu, and the adhesive warts on the body wall are the most adhesive of any of this species found in Japan. The upper half of the body wall is covered with so many pebbles and shell fragments that the body wall of the insect is not visible.

刺胞(しほう)動物門花虫(はなむし)綱六放サンゴ亜綱イソギンチャク目ウメボシイソギンチャク科に属する海産動物。本州、四国、九州に分布する。ウメボシイソギンチャク科のなかで、体壁上端と触手との間に周辺球があり、体壁に吸着疣(いぼ)の列をもつAnthopleura属に属する。体高は4～7センチメートル、体幅は4～6センチメートルで、体壁、触手とも褐色系、周辺球はクリーム色である。触手は5環列の96本。隔膜は4環列の48対で、第1から第3環列は完全隔膜となり生殖腺(せん)をもつ。本州中部の岩礁海岸の潮間帯上・中部ではもっとも普通にみられ、体壁の吸着疣は日本産のこの仲間ではもっとも吸着力に優れ、体壁上半には虫体の体壁が見えないほど多くの小石や貝殻片をつけている。
