A French archipelago located about 400 km northeast of Fiji in the South Pacific. In French it is called the Îles Wallis. It consists of the small volcanic island of Ouvea, with an area of 60 km2, and 12 coral reef islands surrounding it. It has a population of 9,000 (1990). Administratively it is united with the two volcanic islands of Futuna and Alofi (total area 94 km2), located about 200 km southwest. The inhabitants are Polynesian, who practice self-sufficiency agriculture, growing taro, yams, bananas, etc., and are currently all Catholic.
