Wallis Islands

Japanese: ウォリス[諸島]（英語表記）Wallis Islands

A French archipelago located about 400 km northeast of Fiji in the South Pacific. In French it is called the Îles Wallis. It consists of the small volcanic island of Ouvea, with an area of 60 km2, and 12 coral reef islands surrounding it. It has a population of 9,000 (1990). Administratively it is united with the two volcanic islands of Futuna and Alofi (total area 94 km2), located about 200 km southwest. The inhabitants are Polynesian, who practice self-sufficiency agriculture, growing taro, yams, bananas, etc., and are currently all Catholic.

南太平洋のフィジーの北東約400kmに位置するフランス領の諸島。フランス語ではワリー諸島Îles Wallis。面積60km2の小火山島ウベアとこれを囲む12個のサンゴ礁島とからなる。人口9000(1990)。行政上は南西約200kmにあるフトゥナ，アロフィの両火山島(総面積94km2)と一体となっている。住民はポリネシア人で，タロイモ，ヤムイモ，バナナなどの自給農業を営み，現在すべてカトリック教徒である。
