A Russian economist. His pen name was Nikolai-on. He completed the first Russian translation of Das Kapital (Part 1 1872, Part 2 1885, Part 3 1896). He lived his whole life as a member of the public as an employee of a credit union. He began corresponding with Marx at the age of 24, and provided him with a great deal of information and literature on Russia. After Marx's death, he corresponded with Engels. His main work, Outlines of the Social and Economic Conditions of Our Country after the Reformation (1880-93), is an early work that analyzes Russian capitalism. Although he himself said that he was not a Narodnik, he predicted that Russian capitalism would overwhelm "popular production" and that Russian capitalism would reach a dead end, and his theory is a kind of legal Narodnik theory of the decline of Russian capitalism.
