Kobe River

Japanese: 神戸川 - かんどがわ

A river that flows northwest through the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture. It is 81 km long. It originates from Mt. Mengame in Iinan Town, Iishi District, and flows into the Sea of Japan at Taisha Bay in Izumo City. It is written as Kandō River in the Izumo Fudoki. It once flowed into Lake Jinzai, but its course changed frequently due to floods, and the current downstream river course was established during the Edo period through repairs by Okaji Shichibei and others. Boat traffic used to be possible, and boats operated between Tachikue Gorge, known as the Yabakei of Sanin, and Magi Fudo-ma downstream. Upstream is the Kijima Dam, which diverts water into the Gonokawa River, for generating electricity.

Japanese:

島根県東部を北西流する川。延長81キロメートル。飯石(いいし)郡飯南(いいなん)町の女亀(めんがめ／めかめ)山を源とし、出雲(いずも)市の大社(たいしゃ)湾で日本海に注ぐ。『出雲国風土記(ふどき)』には神門(かんど)川と記される。かつては神西(じんざい)湖に注いでいたが、洪水などでたびたび流路を変更し、現在の下流河道は江戸時代に大梶七兵衛らによる改修で定まった。かつては舟運があり、山陰の耶馬渓(やばけい)と称された立久恵(たちくえ)峡と下流の馬木(まぎ)不動間にも舟が運航された。上流には江の川(ごうのかわ)に分水する発電用の来島(きじま)ダムがある。
