...The dimensions shown here are those of the central part of the tower, and the ink inscription indicates that it was built during the Jingo Keiun era (767-770). One million small towers were built, but in addition there were also seven-story small towers (Ichiman-setsu towers) for every 10,000 units, and thirteen-story small towers (Juman-setsu towers) for every 100,000 units. These small towers were placed in the ten major temples of Daian-ji, Gangoji, Kofuku-ji, Yakushi-ji, Todai-ji, Saidai-ji, Horyuji, Kofuku-ji (Kawahara-dera), Shitenno-ji, and Sufuku-ji for the purpose of protecting the nation, but only 40,000 of the Horyuji temples remain today. ...
