Engyo-ji Temple

Japanese: 円教寺 - えんきょうじ

A Tendai sect temple located at the top of Mt. Shosha (363m) in the northern part of Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. The principal image is Nyoirin Kannon. The mountain name is Shoshazan. It is said to have been founded by Shoku at the end of the 9th century. It is the 27th temple of the Thirty-Three Temples of the Western Provinces, and within the temple grounds (historic site) is a large temple building that retains ancient systems. At its peak, it was one of the three major Tendai training centers, along with Mt. Hiei and Daisen-ji. Important cultural properties include the Great Lecture Hall, Jodo Hall, bell tower, and statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. A ropeway runs from the foot of the mountain.

兵庫県姫路市北部の書写山（363m）頂にある天台宗の寺。本尊如意輪観音。山号は書写山。９世紀末，性空(しょうくう)の創建という。西国三十三所27番目の札所で，境内（史跡）に古制を残した大伽藍(がらん)がある。盛時には比叡山，大山寺と並び天台の三大道場であった。大講堂，常行堂，鐘楼，四天王像などの重要文化財がある。山麓からロープウェーが通じる。
