…The committee for the selection of the emperor (6 members each from the Venetian and the Knights), as per the plan of Enrico Dandolo, the Governor of Venice, who had accompanied the crusade, chose Beaudoin, Count of Flanders, over Bonifacio, Margrave of Montferrato, the leader of the crusade. The latter was crowned as Balduinus I (reigned 1204-05; Balduinus I) in the Church of Hagia Sophia by the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople, Tommaso Morosini (a Venetian monk of noble birth), chosen by the Venetian side, which had not produced an emperor (May 1204). He called himself "Emperor and Ruler of the Romans (the inhabitants of the former Byzantine Empire)" and added the title "Count of Flanders and Hainaut" in relation to his vassals who had accompanied him from the west. …
