Courtship behavior

This refers to various behaviors exchanged between males and females to attract the opposite sex and lead to mating. In those that maintain pair bonding after mating, it also includes behaviors taken to maintain the pair bond. In many cases, exaggerated and ritualized courtship displays specific to the species are used. The biological roles of courtship behaviors are to make it easier for males and females to meet, to recognize that they are the same species and to avoid interspecific hybridization, to overcome aggressive and escape tendencies in males and females, and to increase the survival rate of offspring by maintaining pair bonding after mating.

In insects such as grasshoppers and katydids, and male birds attract females by chirping and other sounds. In insects such as moths, females excrete fragrant substances, and male and female fireflies attract mates by luminescence. Male peacocks and birds of paradise make themselves conspicuous with conspicuous colors and flashy behavior. Furthermore, some bowerbirds attract females by cleaning their courtship sites, building basket-like chambered mounds out of grass, and decorating them with nuts, flowers, and pretty pebbles. These mate-attracting behaviors are generally performed alone, but sometimes, as in the case of the prairie chicken, many males gather together and perform them in groups. These behaviors vary even among closely related species, and this helps to avoid interspecific hybridization.

Even if they attract a mate to their vicinity, they must overcome their fear and aggression in order to make physical contact and mate. Many animals hide signals or weapons that would trigger aggression to appease their mate. Black-headed gulls hide the black mask on their heads that unleash their aggression. Ravens look away to appease their mate. Male red-crowned cranes and birds of paradise dance in front of females.

Courtship feeding, in which males offer food to females, and nesting material are also common in birds. Courtship behavior often includes elements of aggression and escape in addition to sexual elements. The zigzag dance of male sticklebacks, a freshwater fish, is a mixture of aggression and guidance of females to the nest.

Some birds have developed rhythmic calls to call each other to maintain pair bonds, and many continue courtship feeding after mating. A "victory ritual" seen in mating pairs of greylag geese is thought to strengthen pair bonds by feigning aggression toward third parties.

異性を引き付け、交尾に導くために雌雄の間で交わされるさまざまな行動をいう。交尾後もつがいを維持するものでは、つがいの絆(きずな)維持のためにとられる行動も含む。多くの場合、誇張され儀式化された種に特有の求愛誇示行動がとられている。求愛行動のもつ生物学的役割は、雌雄が出会いやすくすること、両者が同種の異性であることを認知し、種間交雑を回避すること、雌雄の攻撃気分と逃避気分を克服すること、交尾後もつがい関係を維持することにより子の生存率を高めることである。

　バッタやキリギリスなどの昆虫類や鳥類の雄は、鳴き声などの音声により雌を引き付ける。また、ガなどの昆虫類では、雌が芳香性のある物質を出すことにより、ホタルの雌雄は発光により、それぞれ異性を引き付ける。クジャクやゴクラクチョウの雄は、目だつ色彩やはでな行動により自己を目だちやすくする。さらに、ニワシドリの仲間には、求愛する場所を掃除し、草で籠(かご)状の部屋をもった塚をつくり、木の実、花、きれいな小石などで飾り付けることにより雌を引き付けるものがある。異性を引き付けるこれらの行動は一般に単独で行うが、ソウゲンライチョウのように多数の雄が集まって集団で行うこともある。これらの行動は、近縁種の間でも違いがあり、それが種間交雑を避けるのに役だっている。

　異性を近くに呼び寄せても、体を接触させ交尾するためには、さらに互いの恐怖心や攻撃性を克服することが必要である。多くの動物では、攻撃性を引き起こすような信号や武器を隠し、相手の気持ちを和ませる。ユリカモメは、攻撃性を解発する頭の黒いマスクを隠す動作をする。ワタリガラスは目をそらし、相手の気持ちを和らげる。タンチョウやフウチョウ類の雄は雌の前で踊る。

　雄が雌に食物を提供する求愛給餌(きゅうじ)や巣の材料を差し出す行動も鳥類では広く認められる。多くの場合、求愛行動には、性的な要素に加えて攻撃行動と逃避行動の要素が含まれている。淡水魚のトゲウオの雄のジグザグ踊りは、雌に対する攻撃と巣への誘導動作とが入り混じったものである。

　鳥類のなかには、つがいの絆を保つために互いに呼び交わすリズミカルな鳴き声を発達させているものがある。また、交尾後も求愛給餌が行われているものも多く、ハイイロガンのつがいにみられる「勝利の儀式」とよばれる行動は、第三者に見せかけの攻撃をすることにより、つがいの絆を強める行動と考えられる。
