A comprehensive term for the movement that developed in the late 19th century and early 20th century in novels, poetry, theater, painting, music, architecture, film (mainly from the 1920s onwards), photography, fashion and other fields, aiming to drastically innovate content, form and method by rejecting traditionalism and realism. Avant-garde art movements such as Symbolism, Impressionism, Cubism, Dadaism and Surrealism can all be considered to be included in the broad definition of modernism. In that sense, modernism may have been a search for style itself rather than a style (M. Bradbury and J. McFarlane, Modernism, 1976). Its general tendencies are (1) the dismantling of the stable 19th century time and space structure, and a tendency towards fragmentation, (2) a focus on the subconscious world, such as the flow of consciousness and unconscious memory, and (3) a sharpening of methodological consciousness. There is endless debate in each country, region, and cultural sphere about how long modernism continued and at what stage it transitioned to postmodernism or not, but modernism undoubtedly peaked in the 1920s, when it was developed simultaneously around the world. Monumental works include Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time (1913-1927), James Joyce's Ulysses (1922), and William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury (1929), followed by TS Eliot's collection of poems The Waste Land (1922), Ernest Hemingway's series of short stories In Our Time (1925), John Dos Passos' Manhattan Transfer Point (1925), and Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (1927).

19世紀末から20世紀前半にかけて、小説、詩、演劇、絵画、音楽、建築、映画(ただし、主に1920年代以降)、写真、ファッションなどの諸分野において展開された、伝統主義やリアリズムを排して内容、形式、手法の大幅な刷新を企図する運動の、包括的呼称。象徴主義、印象主義、キュビスム、ダダイズム(ダダ)、シュルレアリスムなどの前衛的芸術運動は、すべて広義のモダニズムに含めて考えることができる。その意味でモダニズムは、様式というよりもむしろ様式の模索それ自体であったのかもしれない(M.ブラッドベリ、J.マクファレイン『モダニズム』、1976年)。(1)19世紀的な安定した時間・空間構造の解体、断片化への志向、(2)意識の流れや無意識的記憶など、意識下の世界への着目、(3)方法意識の尖鋭化などが、その全般的な傾向である。それぞれの国、地域、文化圏で、モダニズムがいつまで継続し、どの段階でポストモダニズムに移行していったのかそうでないのか、についても議論が絶えないが、モダニズムのピークは、間違いなく、それが世界的同時性をもって展開された1920年代にあった。記念碑的作品としては、まずマルセル・プルースト『失われた時を求めて』(13〜27年)、ジェームズ・ジョイス『ユリシーズ』(22年)、ウィリアム・フォークナー『響きと怒り』(29年)が、次いでT.S.エリオットの詩集『荒地』(22年)、アーネスト・ヘミングウェイの連作短編集『われらの時代に』(25年)、ジョン・ドス・パソス『マンハッタン乗り換え口』(25年)、ヴァージニア・ウルフ『灯台へ』(27年)などがあげられる。
