(1) A god in Japanese mythology. In the Kojiki, when Okuninushi-no-Mikoto did not know the name of the god that came across the sea, he answered that it was Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto. He is also called Yamada no Sodo, and is said to be "a god who, although he cannot walk, knows everything that happens under the heavens." (2) A scarecrow standing in a rice field. Its appearance, exposed to the elements, is likened to a man called Biko (male). In Nagano Prefecture, the Kariage Festival on October 10 of the lunar calendar is called "Scarecrow Pulling," and people offer rice cakes and other things to the scarecrow to send the rice god off to the mountains. The scarecrow is the god's agent who watches over the growth of the rice. Its one leg is also the sitting posture of the one-legged king Shiva, who is symbolized by the phallus, and is said to be a spell to make the earth mother pregnant.
