Aromaticity

Japanese: 芳香族性 - ほうこうぞくせい（英語表記）aromaticity

A concept used to explain the unusual stability of aromatic compounds such as benzene. Many organic compounds with a benzene ring, such as anethole (the component that gives an aniseed oil its sweet aroma) and vanillin (the component that gives an aromatic banana aroma), have an aromatic smell, and the term aromaticity has come to be used as a concept to explain their thermodynamic stability. In terms of reactivity, these compounds are quite unreactive, do not undergo addition reactions, and are prone to electrophilic substitution reactions (electrophilic reactions).

ベンゼンなど芳香族化合物の異常な安定性を説明するための概念。アネトール(アニス油の甘い香りの成分)，バニリン(バナナの香りの成分)などベンゼン環をもつ有機化合物の多くが芳香aromaを有することから転じて，これらの熱力学的安定性を説明するための概念として芳香族性ということばが使われるようになった。これらの化合物は，反応性の点からいえば，かなり反応性に乏しく，付加反応を起こさず，求電子置換反応が起こりやすい(求電子反応)。
